Frank Herbert's Dune is the reason I read books.
Ok for many people reading starts in school or home. True I learned to read starting at home and school but I never actually read for myself. I read because of the demands of getting good grades. I never thought of it as enjoyment until I saw Frank Herbert's Dune miniseries. How does seeing something on TV get you to actually reading it a book? The novels have more to say.
I started reading the prequels written by Frank Herbert's son
Dune: House Atreides
Dune: House Harkonnen
Dune: House Corrino
Then Dune itself.
and eventually read all of the Dune series.
I was captivated by the character, settings ambiance.
Seeing the desert of Arrakis in my minds eye, hearing the sound of the sand in the wind and smelling the bitter sent of the spice.
This is what got me hooked.
This is my addiction.

You can't get off to a better start than you can with this confession. I became a lover of Dune after knowing nothing about this world and then I saw the 1984 David Lynch movie. I was hooked on all things DUNE after that. I will talk the ear off anyone who knows their 'spice' from their 'Bene Gesserit'. I often dream of the sands of Arrakis.
